GAWAD SANTO TOMAS




Zosimo E. Lee is Professor of Philosophy. He received his doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo as a Fulbright scholar. He specializes in Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Kant, Wittgenstein, Philosophy of Education and others. He was Dean of UP Tacloban College from 1991 to 1994, and Dean of the UP Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy from 2004 to 2010. He received the UP Diliman Centennial Professorial Chair in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He was Fulbright Visiting Scholar with the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University during the Fall term 2011. Arnulfo P. Azcarraga is Professor of Computer Science at the De La Salle University (DLSU).  He received his doctorate in Computer Science from the INP de Grenoble, France in 1993 on scholarship from the French Government, M.S. in Computer Science degree from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand, and B. S. Applied Mathematics degree from the University of the Philippines (UP) at Los Banos, cum laude.  Since 1993, Dr. Azcarraga has been assigned to various administrative posts at the DLSU, as Associate Vice Chancellor for External Relations and as Dean of the College of Computer Studies, Graduate School Director and Vice Dean.  Currently, he is the Vice Chancellor for Research at DLSU.  He has been a senior research fellow at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore and Program Manager of the Program for Research into Intelligent Systems.  He is a certified Quality Assurance assessor of the ASEAN University Network.  He received Gawad Lagablab (Most Outstanding Alumnus of the Philippine Science High School), Most Outstanding Alumnus of UPLB, and Most Outstanding Employee of the National Computer Center. Rochelle Irene G. Lucas is Associate Professor at the Department of English and Applied Linguistics and the Vice Dean of the College of Education, De La Salle University (DLSU) - Manila.  She obtained her Ph. D. in Applied Linguistics from the same University.  Dr. Lucas has published, presented and conducted research in bilingualism, language learning in children, motivation, alternative assessment and discourse analysis.  She is currently under the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Training for the International Deans' Course in Southeast Asia. Jose Y. Dalisay Jr. (Butch Dalisay to readers of his "Penman" column in the Philippine STAR) was born in Romblon, Philippines in 1954.  As of January 2006, he had published 15 books of his stories, plays, and essays, with five of those books receiving the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle. In 1998, he was named to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Centennial Honors List for his work as a playwright and fictionist. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1984 (AB English, cum laude ), the University of Michigan (MFA, 1988) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Ph.D. English, 1991). He teaches English and Creative Writing as a full professor at the University of the Philippines, where he also serves as coordinator of the creative writing program and as an Associate of the UP Institute of Creative Writing. After serving as chairman of the English Department, he became Vice President for Public Affairs of the UP System from May 2003 to February 2005.  Among his distinctions, he has won 16 Palanca Awards in five genres (entering the Palanca Hall of Fame in 2000), five Cultural Center of the Philippines awards for playwriting, and Famas, Urian, Star and Catholic Film awards and citations for his screenplays. He was named one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of 1993 for his creative writing. He has been a Fulbright, Hawthornden, David TK Wong, Rockefeller, and British Council fellow. Shirley O. Lua is an Associate Professor at the Department of Literature, De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila. She holds a Ph.D. in Literature and an M. A. in Language and Literature major in English, from the DLSU where she graduated with high distinction. She is currently the Director of the DLSU Bienvenido N. Nuna E. Almanzor is the current Director of the Department of Science and Technology  Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI).


Cecilia Santos-Acuin is a Research Faculty Member of the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines, Manila, and member of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Research Utilization Committee.  She is a family medicine physician and medical anthropologist with a Ph. D. in Human Nutrition from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  Dr. Santos-Acuin is an international author and consultant to the WHO, USAID and Helen Keller Foundation.  Her research interests include child health and nutrition, reproductive health, health sector reform, health equity promotion and traditional medicine.  One of her current researches is an assessment of nutritional status among children with autism.  She is currently the Chief of the Nutritional Assessment & Monitoring Division, FNRI, DOST, while still serving as part-time faculty member of UP-Manila.


Antonio A. Alfonso is Scientist at PhilRice and a faculty member at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU).  He leads a team at Philrice that aims to develop, evaluate, and deliver beta-carotene-enriched rice varieties in the Philippines.  Among his awards are Outstanding PhilRice Official, Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) in Plant Pathology, and The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in Science and Technology.  His research interests include nutritional enhancement and improvement of rice resistance to drought, insect pests and diseases, and other important traits through conventional breeding, wide hybridization, induced mutation, and genetic engineering.  He finished BS Biology from CLSU, cum laude, MS Genetics (minor in Plant Breeding) from UPLB, and Ph. D. in Plant Biology (major in Plant Molecular Biology, minor in Biochemistry and Plant Genetics) from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  He received research grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, Generation Challenge Program and DA Biotech Project Implementation Unit.
